Getting your home renovated is an extremely exhilarating time for any homeowner. You’re finally going to have that kitchen/basement/bathroom etc. that you’ve always dreamed of! Although the entire process is very exciting, it’ll be helpful to know exactly what you’re getting into and what the situation will look like for you and your family while the renovation is in place.
So, we are going to tell you all about what that process will look like and give you some tips into how you can best prepare for what is to come!
Hire the Right Team
The first step in the renovation process is choosing the right contractors or team! You’ll want to do your research and meet with a few different companies to see who you feel the most comfortable with and who you feel will be able to give you the exact outcome you are looking for!
If you want more information on how to make this decision you can visit one of our previous blog posts covering that entire process specifically, HERE.
Meet With Your Renovation Team
Once you’ve chosen your renovation team you’ll likely need to meet with them or speak with them a few times before the physical process can begin in your home! You’ll need to explain to them exactly what it is that you’re looking to have done, and discuss potential budget, styles, materials etc.
After you’ve told them what you’re looking for you’ll need to make sure that you are happy with the final design and plans that have been made. You’ll need to sign off on them before the work can begin!
Here at Under The Sun Home Renovations, we start with a consultation where we discuss your vision. Then we create a complete 3D Rendering video of what the finished project will be expected to look like, and only once you’ve given your approval on that do we begin to make your project come to life!
Make A Plan
Make sure that you have a plan for what you want the renovation to accomplish, whether that be increasing the value of your home or finally making your dream home come to life. Have a clear plan in mind and do your best to stick to it without over or under doing it for your lifestyle and your neighbourhood!
Make sure you are prepared for when the renovations start, meaning ensure the space that is being remodelled is emptied and anything that can be removed in advance is cleared away to make room for your renovation team to get started.
Decide whether you will be living in your home during the renovation or whether you will be temporarily relocating and ensure that you are organized, packed and ready to go well before the start date to avoid any extra stress or anxiety for you and your family! The process will be much more exciting if you go into it with a level head!
Your Routine Will Be Disrupted
Whether you’ve chosen to stay in your home or relocate during the process, prepare for your regular routine to be a bit disrupted while the work is in progress! You’ll have to live and work around everything that is going on if you want to ensure a quick and painless reno process!
You’ll have your contractors coming in and out of your home on a regular basis during this process, the easiest way to approach this situation is to try your best to stay out of their way; not because they don’t want to be bothered but because you want to give them the opportunity to work as quickly and efficiently as possible to finish your project.
Expect A Messy Home
There will be days when you walk into your house and it will likely look like a bit of a disaster. DON’T PANIC! This is completely normal and to be expected with any home renovation. You can expect to find tools and potentially even trash within the work area during the process but it will all be cleaned up and taken care of by the time the project is finished.
If you don’t handle mess well it may be a good idea to consider staying elsewhere during this process to help ease your mind during the process! Either a hotel, rental or maybe stay with a friend or family member for a few days here and there depending on the length of your project!
Be Ready for Possible Changes/Delays
With something as large as remodeling an entire room in your home it is expected that there will be a few bumps along the way! Although it may not happen, it is always suggested that you prepare yourself for the idea of potential delays to the finish date. A number of factors can affect how quickly the work can be completed, but you want the project to be done right, so if that means it takes a little longer at least you’ll be mentally prepared for it!
Also keep your mind open to potential changes in design or placements of things depending on new information that may arise as the project is being executed. For example, the renovation team may find piping, wires etc., in places where they had originally planned to remodel or deconstruct! If this happens, the right team will ensure to still do whatever they can to make your vision come to life in a new way that is more practical for the situation!
Of course every renovation project is different and no process will go EXACTLY the same way, but if you prepare yourself for at least the 6 scenarios listed above you will have a much easier time adjusting and even enjoying this crazy and exciting time in your home!
